13 Feared Dead In Edo Auto Crash

13 electronic traders lost their lives in an accident on Sunday along the Benin-Lagos Expressway.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, at the toll gate, near Okada, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State,

The accident, which occurred  at the Edo-Ondo  state’s border, reportedly claimed the lives of the traders heading for Onitsha, Anambra State, from Lagos.

Deputy Corps Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Bisi Kazeem, who confirmed the incident through a statement, said three others, who survived the accident and bodies of the dead were taken to Shiloh Hospital in Ugbogui, Ovia South West Local Government Area.

The accident, according to the FRSC official, involved Toyota Hiace Bus with number plate YB610 EPE  belonging to Anambra Mass Transit and a truck (IVECO) marked AAA 962 XB.

Kazeem, who attributed the accident to violation of road traffic laws by the driver of one of the vehicles, said it took the combined efforts of his men (FRSC), policemen, villagers and other road users to rescue trapped passengers from the mangled bus.

Kazeem said, “The crash was caused by the driver of the Anambra Mass Transit bus, who, for no reason at all, drove against traffic on the Benin-Ore lane, thereby facing an on-coming Iveco truck descending a slope, resulting in head-on collision. The bus was coming from Lagos carrying traders dealing in electronics. Thirteen out of the passengers in the bus died, including the driver. The two passengers in the truck survived.”

Meanwhile, Osun State Government has procured 10 ambulances to be stationed at strategic routes in the state.

Osun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Temitope Ilori, stated this on Sunday at a news conference in Osogbo.

She said the ambulances would be distributed to accident-prone areas of the state, adding that the government was committed to saving the lives of accident victims on the roads.

Ilori said, “The sanctity of life to Osun State Government cannot be compromised. Osun State indigenes, residents and those transiting through our state would enjoy driving on smooth, safe roads.

“This is why the state government has embarked on reconstruction of inter and intra state roads. Most road accidents are caused by bad roads. We will reverse this trend by giving our people good roads
