8 corp members died in Lagos in a service year

Lagos -  Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, Lagos State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Thursday disclosed that eight  batch `C` corps members that served in the state died during the service year.

Adeyemi made the disclosure while speaking during the passing-out ceremony of the corps members.

``On a sad note, eight patriots lost their lives during the service year, `` she said.

She said that it was sad that the corps members died when the nation needed their services most.



The Coordinator said four corps members received the state honours award for hard work in line with the NYSC policy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the awardees include: Miss Goodness Effiiong Udom, Mr Benjamin Okoro, Mr Ekhorutomwen Oubokhan and Mr Romanus Chizoba

Adeyemi further hinted that 53 others would repeat the service year for absconding from their places of primary assignment.

She commended the corps members for embarking on worthy projects, including the reconstruction of a burnt school, library, office, and the sensitisation of 30 blind youths on HIV/AIDS.

``I congratulate the corps members for their successful completion of their service year and salute your courage and doggedness that helped you accomplish your feat.

``The tenets of hard work, discipline, honesty, loyalty, patriotism, uprightness and integrity will continually be relevant as you climb up in life, `` Adeyemi said.

Gov. Babatunde Fashola, also commended the corps members for their focus and resilience in bringing positive impact to education, agriculture, health, and environment in the state.

Fashola, represented by Mr Joseph Abolude, Director, General Services Department, Ministry of Special Duties, said that the corps members recorded remarkable achievement in all spheres of the socio-economic development of the state.

``As you leave today, do not hesitate to put into practice the experience you have gained by setting up your own enterprise, no matter how small, and grow from there,`` he said.

Dr Wale Ahmed, Commissioner for Special Duties, urged the corps members to maintain the progressive credential of the scheme, as well as preach unity and tolerance amongst Nigerians.

NAN recalls that a total of 8165 Batch 'C' corps members served in the state.
